The Difference Between Phone and In Person Interviews
In-Person Interviews
- Show up on time or a few minutes early.
- Dress for the role.
- Present a warm, friendly smile.
- Have a few extra copies of your resume.
- You are ready because you are prepared.
- Is this a 1st or second interview. If the 1st, the goal is to get a second one. If the second, the goal is to get an offer.
- Exchange pleasantries.
- Use the interviewers name in your responses.
- Do not provide yes or no responses – give examples – related to the job description.
- Show your personality
- Be aware of body language (you and them)
- Show that you have done your research
- Sales contracts
- New products and services
- Wait for them to ask if you have questions. If they don’t, speak up and say I have a few questions.
- Ask about the interview process and next steps
Phone Interviews
- Test your technology.
- Adjust your webcam and microphone settings.
- If it is a video interview, dress the part from the waist up

- The goal of the phone interview is to get an in-person interview

- Know the job description and practice your responses. Know them cold.
- Be aware of the time – Just the facts.
- Check their boxes relating to the job description.
- Wait for them to ask if you have questions. If they don’t, speak up and say I have a few questions.
