How You Follow-up After an Interview Can Determine the Success of Your Job Search
Thank You Note
- Send thank you notes within 24 hours.
- Preferably by email.
- All things being equal, those that send thank you notes versus those that do not have a better chance of getting the job (especially if you are in sales, customer service or marketing.
- A Thank You note is more than just thanking the person for the interview. It is another touchpoint to express why you are a good candidate for the position.
- Ask for the job – or not!
Dear Bill,
I wanted to thank you for the opportunity to interview with XYZ Company for the position of XXXXX. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and (others) and learning more about the company and the position. I feel that my background and experience with (2 examples) would be a great fit for the position and an asset to your organization. I am very interested in this position and look forward to next steps.

Follow-Up Messages
- During the interview ask about the interview process and next steps? (days or weeks)
- On or around that date send a follow-up note.
- Typically, if they are interested, they will contact you. If they are not, you may not hear back from them. This is why you send a note.
- It’s better to get a no, than have it left open ended.
Dear Mary,
I wanted to follow-up regarding my interview with XYZ Company for the position of XXXXX. You had mentioned that communications regarding next steps would be provided within (XXXX days/weeks). I wanted to follow-up on the status of the opening and to again let you know that I am still very much interested in the position. When you get a chance, can you please send a note regarding status and next steps.
