What is a comprehensive job search strategy? Its putting together all the pieces of your search and have them all working together.
This includes resumes, cover letters, job board registrations, setting up customized job search alerts, editing and optimizing your LinkedIn profile, properly preparing for interviews, performing company research, thank you notes and offer letters of employment.
A comprehensive job search starts with your resume. Sure, everyone has a resume… But did you know that 95% of all resumes don’t make in passed the 10-second rule. That means that 95 out of 100 resumes are disregarded in the first 10 seconds because they are either poorly written, not relevant to the position, the reader can’t figure out who you are, what you have done and what you are looking for. If the reader has too many questions, they are not going to contact you to ask. They will just disregard you.
Having a poor resume carries forward to the rest of your job search. In this economy, with so many people out of work, your resume can’t be just OK. It has to be awesome. So how do you get an awesome resume?
You get one by having someone like me ask you the right questions. Each and everyone of you have so much experience, but the overwhelming majority of you are not effectively communicating this in your resume. My expertise is in asking you the right questions, pulling this information out of you and then writing a better compelling and comprehensive story. Your resume must speak for you when you cant speak for it
We then use this resume to register on each and every job board. Registrations are free, but each board is different. Remember the job boards serve two purposes. The first is to be found. Companies and recruiters are looking for you. Can they find you.
The second purpose of the job boards is to set up customized job opening alerts. It is very time consuming process to set this up on each and every board. It is extremely important that this is correctly set up from the start (Titles and positions, geography, years of experience, salary, industry specific key words. If you set these alerts up correctly, these opening come to you in your inbox, each and everyday.
The next important piece of your job search is to effectively update and optimize your Linkedin profile. From your banner image, to your profile picture, to your headline, position descriptions, skills and recommendations. Remember, the first thing a recruiter or hiring manager does is to read your resume. The next thing is the check you out on LinkedIn. Then let’s say you are fortunate to get an interview. If you do not accurately prepare, you don’t stand a chance at getting the job. Just as important is knowing how and when to send a Thank You and Follow-up letter. And then if you get the job offer, it is extremely important to understand what needs to be included or you do not accept the offer
Remember it’s, all these things working together that make up a comprehensive job search. Another area of your search to pay attention to are the published jobs and they unpublished jobs. When you are looking for a new job, you never know where the opportunity is going to come from. It could be because a hiring manager or recruiter found your resume in a database.
It could be because you found a job from an alert that came to your inbox. It could be from within the job board platform that you conducted a search. It could also be from putting together a list of companies you want to work for, visiting their websites, going to the Careers Page, seeing an opening and applying. Many companies have positions that are not published in the public domain – only internally. The only way to find these are thru Human Resources. So, you need a strategy to find the right HR person to reach out to directly.
You also need to leverage your existing network. And even more important is to understand the power of your networks network and how to tap into it Without a comprehensive job search strategy, you are basically dead in the water.
